They also help you create content and look busier then you might be if you sit around and wait for the perfect client to come. You basically create the perfect client and show them their way to you. I know a lot of photographers who do shoot for free and ruining the industry and market for other photographers out there who actually have to pay their bills and rent a business legally. However there is a way you can shoot for free to build your business and eventually end up having the ability to charge more. Not create a business that is based on freebees and attracting clients who are just working with you because you are free or cheap.

Not only is your ideal client someone you would love to work for and be around, but it is someone who would love to hire you.
But how do you know who this person is and where are they hiding?
When I first started out I was hungry and I took any client I could. I was just so happy someone actually wanted me to take their picture, that I did not care who they were or what they wanted. I even let them negotiate with me so much that I would actually be losing money on the job!
Looking back, not only was this a disservice to me and my son, who also likes to eat, but this was an even bigger disservice to the actual client. I could not afford to take my time and do a good job. I was exhausted and could not do my best work.
If you are walking into a situation where you are not being appreciated, you are not going to be doing your best work either. However, I was not confident enough to charge what I needed to. No one tells you how to do that. They just say, "Identify your target client and go find where they hang out and go do that..." It took me years to truly figure out how to do this, or what this even meant. I understood it in concept, but in reality it was a very vague concept and I was very vague about who I was attracting. Think of asking your 18 year old self what your husband is going to be like….“Well, he is going to be really good looking, make good money, really love me, want to spend all his free time with me, and not complain when I shop to much.” Well, that is a good start, but let’s face it...that is not really exact. I get so many questions about my Instagram. You see, about a year ago I only had 900 followers. Most people I had already known from Facebook and high school. But no “fans” or people who would potentially want my photography services.
I wasn’t getting any interaction on my Instagram. No one would like my photos and I definitely was not getting any bookings from Instagram or even any acknowledgment. I would see these other people with so-so photos and info, and they would have a ton of likes and comments. I did what any mature and rational person would do, and with my hairdresser Sara, chalked it up to them buying likes and followers with one of those apps.
You see, once I hit 900 followers I kind of hit a plateau and my followings stopped.
