As high-achieving entrepreneurs, it’s important for us to take care of our body, mind, and spirit.

Otherwise, we’ll find ourselves holding a one-way ticket to burnout, a place where no one wants to be.

If we want to expand our capacity and do more purposeful work in 2019, we can’t be out of sync with what our body needs.

Improving your health and wellbeing is less of a destination you have to reach and more of an ever-evolving journey.

It’s not about trying to “arrive” but rather opening your mind to new strategies and recommendations that can enhance your health and wellness routines.

2019 will be a big year for health and wellness trends as self-care becomes more important, but let’s first look back at some of the top trends of 2018:

  • Keto diet: This low carb, high fat and protein diet became all the rage in 2018. While I don’t love the idea of giving up pastries and pasta, I can see why the Keto diet is such a great choice for people who want to lose weight.   • Fitbits: Remember when people only used Fitbits to count their steps? The Fitbit has come a long way since then! Now it can track your heart rate, sleep time, and other metrics that are related to your physical health.

  • Intermittent fasting: It isn’t new, but intermittent fasting was a huge trend last year. It’s when you only eat during a certain time of the day and fast for the rest of the day. Most people try to sync this up with their sleep and work schedule. At least you could still eat sweets with this diet!

Now that we have those in mind, let’s talk about the biggest trends we’ll see in 2019. Some of them may already look familiar while others may surprise you.

CBD oil

CBD oil is a natural, non-psychoactive remedy that is used to alleviate stress and pain. It has been known to treat people with chronic pain and anxiety, two things I’ve suffered from while trying to run multiple businesses for over a decade.

I only wish I would have had the ability to start using it sooner because it’s been life-changing to use it to manage my fibromyalgia and migraines. And I’m not the only one who is using it to help me with pain management.

Oat milk is a great option for dairy-averse consumers who are looking for a healthier option. Almosts everyone eats oats, making it an easy product to fit into your diet.

It doesn’t hurt that it’s usually more affordable than other dairy alternatives like cashew milk or coconut milk. It’s also gluten-free and vegan-friendly, which seems to be the trend for people on the coasts.

While you can make oat milk at home, it’s becoming more readily available at grocery stores and at coffeeshops. It’s not uncommon for coffeeshops to offer an oat milk alternative when making traditionally milk-based drinks.

The next time you order a hot chocolate or latte, give oat milk a try. With its silky smooth texture and sweet taste, you’ll probably want to order another. (Save one for me!)

You may have noticed that popular stores like Target and Walmart recently launched grocery pickup services, but do you know what’s even better? Getting prepared meals delivered right to your door.

As a single mom and work-from-home entrepreneur, subscription-based meal plans have been a life saver. I no longer have to worry about what I should make for dinner, which makes my son and I both happy. The meals also include healthier ingredients than what you’d find in the frozen aisle of your grocery store.

Since I work at a local coworking space in the Bay area, I needed meals that I could quickly grab on my way out the door. Most entrepreneurs and freelancers have on-the-go lifestyles so it helps to have a subscription meal service when you want a healthy option you can easily pack in your purse.

Subscription meal services basically do meal planning and preparation for you. I tried to get into meal planning years ago but never felt like I had the time to do it consistently. As more Millennial women excel in their careers and become the breadwinner of their family, having a service that plans and preps your meals is a must-have.

Subscription meal plans have also improved SO much in the last year. They’re more affordable and put food waste at an all-time low. Besides, who has the time in the day to cook three meals (or more) totally from scratch, and somehow fit in grocery shopping multiple times each week?

  • Freshly: Freshly is not only an easy smoothie subscription, but they give you a small daily dose of medicine in every delicious beverage. They are uniquely made to energize you and help you feel good. They have not only cleared up my skin but also help me feel full so I don’t have to eat unnecessary snacks throughout the day. Also, I don’t have to argue with my son Grant about getting his daily dose of vegetables. (I call that a parenting win!)   • Daily Harvest: This food subscription service has been a Godsend (not even exaggerating!) for helping me manage my diabetes and making sure I have a full meal while working. I can get caught up in the daily hustle really easily, so I frequently forget to eat. If I do remember to eat, I don’t eat enough and then binge eat bad food later to make up for it. Most subscription meal plans have a trial period where you can test it out to see if it works for your lifestyle and family. That’s what I did when I got started because I wasn’t sure if it would stick right away. Now I never have to spend an afternoon at the grocery store shopping because meals come to my doorstep. It’s amazing!

Digital Wellbeing

Do you feel like you and your phone are attached at the hip? I do! I’m almost always scrolling through Instagram or talking with my Get Found Stock team on Slack. I don’t even want to know how many hours I spend each day on my phone...

The average Millennial spends at least five hours on their phone every day. I wish I was exaggerating that number but it’s true. For those of us who run an online business, the number can easily be higher than that.

2019 is a great year to become more aware of how much time you spend on your digital devices and how it’s affecting your overall health. Some of the major tech giants are making it easier than ever to measure your digital consumption time.

In one of its latest iOS updates, Apple included a Screen Time feature that measures the amount of time you spend on your phone and each app. I’ll give you a fair warning that the data may shock you.

You can also set a limit on how much time you want to spend on your phone or on a specific app. When your time is up, it will lock you out of the app so you aren’t tempted to mindlessly scroll through social media or answer emails late into the night.

I’m predicting this will become more mainstream in 2019 and more parents will start using these features to manage their kid’s digital consumption time. We should expect to see more of these updates come to our digital home devices, too. Imagine Alexa scolding you for being on your phone too long… that sounds about right.

Probiotics

Gut health is incredibly important, and adding probiotics to your diet is one of the best ways to manage and improve your digestive health. Probiotics can come in supplement, food, and beverage form, making it easy to implement probiotics into your diet.

Kombucha is a naturally effervescent and fermented drink that is typically made with sweetened black or green tea. It is also made with bacteria and yeast, but don’t let that throw you off! Kombucha was a fad in 2018 but it fading fast since it has high sugar content and the health benefits haven’t been proven.

You can find what weeks you are the most productive and what weeks you should be resting. It’s amazing!

MCT Oil

You can thank Keto dieters for introducing MCT oil to the mass market this year. It isn’t a new oil by any means, but it is growing in popularity this year because of how easy it is to include this brain-boosting, healthy fat-based oil into your diet.

MCT oil is odorless, colorless, and it stays in liquid form when kept at room temperature. I love that it doesn’t have an overpowering taste when I mix it with food, coffee, or smoothies. Sometimes I forget if I added it because it doesn’t have much of a taste. I can add it to just about anything and know it’ll give me more energy.

I have been using MCT oil for a while and have noticed that I have better focus when I take it. I think it has made me smarter too, but my corgi Duke is the only one who seems to agree with me on that...

Mushrooms for wellness

Call me crazy, but at the end of 2019, you’ll see that I was right in saying that mushrooms will become a big trend. Because of their anti-inflammatory properties and mood-boosting benefits, mushrooms are becoming more mainstream.

I love that Daily Harvest uses them in their lattes (yes, you read that right!) instead of caffeine. I didn’t know that they used mushrooms for a few weeks. You can imagine my surprise when I found out, but I totally love the lattes.

After drinking lattes regularly in the morning, I no longer feel jittery and don’t feel the need to stay up late. Their tumeric lattes are my absolute favorite, though. (Okay, I know that was a 2018 trend, but it still counts, right?)
