Ready for the best natural skin care tips? Your natural skin care routine shouldn’t take all morning! These tips will help you improve your skin with organic skin care products.
Do you feel like everyone knows the basics of cultivating a beauty routine but you?
I used to feel the exact same way.
No one really taught me the basics of creating a natural skin care routine when I was growing up. If someone did mention something, it basically went in one ear and out the other.
In my early twenties, I started to notice just how much my eating and skincare habits were catching up with me, not to mention my lack of sleep most nights.
Being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease was a big wakeup call for me. Taking care of my body was no longer a luxury but something I needed to do in order to stay healthy, alert, and energized.
It took me a while to find a natural skin care routine that fit my busy schedule (especially since I was particularly lazy in this area – oops!), but now I have a beauty routine I look forward to when I wake up in the morning. I never thought I’d say that, but it’s true!
But before we can talk about skincare, we need to talk about daily healthy habits. As a work-from-home mom, I live and breathe by these habits to make sure I am prioritizing self-care every day of the week.
Natural skin care routine 101: Where to start
Get enough sleep
Sleep is sacred. To look like your brightest self when you wake up in the morning, you’ll want to get a good amount of sleep the night before. While you sleep, your body boosts blood flow to your skin, which means you wake up with a healthy glow.
A good night’s sleep can reduce the bags under your eyes, dark circles, and wrinkles. But there are more benefits than just improving your skin. Sleep can also give you fuller, healthier hair. Since my hair has a tendency to get flat at times, having this extra boost of volume does wonders!
How much sleep do you need in order to see the health benefits? Well, it depends. (I know that can be the most dreaded answer ever!)
We typically need around 7-9 hours of sleep, but I usually shoot for at least 8 hours to make sure I am waking up with great energy the next day. This is especially helpful since my energy ebbs and flows throughout the day as I manage my autoimmune disease.
I recommend setting an ongoing alarm so you are waking up at the same time every morning to keep yourself on a consistent schedule. It’s also great if you can go to bed around the same time every night. This will help you function at a high level when you are ready to start the day.
If you have a hard time easing yourself into sleep each night, essential oils could help. Lavender essential oils are typically known for helping with sleep, but you can also get aromatherapy essential oils to help you feel relaxed.
An essential oil diffuser is a total must! All I have to do is put a couple essential oil drops into my diffuser at night and I’m ready for bed.
Drink more water than you think
Since your body is around 60-70% water, you need to drink enough water in order to replenish your body. Much like sleep, it helps you improve your skin, hair, and nails. If you feel light-headed or exhausted but you got enough sleep the night before, it might be a sign that you need to stay hydrated.
It is recommended to drink about eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day, which comes to about half a gallon. Yeah, you read that right! That might sound like a LOT of water, but I’ve got a few tricks to make it easier to drink enough water throughout the day.
- Get a reusable water bottle. Most of us need an on-the-go option for drinking water. I know I do! I’m constantly on the move while I run errands, meet other entrepreneurs for coffee, or go to a coworking space to get some work done. Instead of buying plastic disposable water bottles that can be costly and produce more waste, why not grab a water bottle that you can reuse over and over again? You can even get reusable water bottles that have a filter built inside so you can fill it up with tap water from the sink or a nearby water fountain.
- Use a fruit diffuser. If plain water isn’t your thing, you can add fruit, cucumber, or other natural flavors to enhance your water. When in doubt, add lemon! It raises your vitamin C levels, aids in digestion, and helps you stay hydrated.
- Try sparkling water. Sparkling water can be a great option, especially for people who love the carbonation of soda but want to cut out the extra sugars. You can still have a bubbly, fizzy drink that tastes refreshing. A SodaStream is perfect for creating your own sparkling water at home. You can switch up your flavors more often with their flavor drops and save yourself from having to make trips to the grocery store to pick up sparkling water cans.
Reduce sugars and grains
I love donuts and pastries just as much as the next girl, but those sugars and grains often lead to skin breakouts and unhealthy habits.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a sweet treat to end my workday, only to leave me feeling more groggy and tired than I did before.
Foods with high sugars can hurt your metabolism, making it harder to burn those calories during your morning yoga workout or kickboxing class. Since I want to make sure my time in the gym counts, I try to cut out grains and sugars as much as possible.
If you have a sweet tooth like me, you’re probably looking for some alternatives that satisfy your appetite without all of the carbs and sugars. Here are a few foods to stay away from and others you’ll want to add to your grocery shopping list.
Inside my natural skin care routine
Now that you are watching the foods you put into your body while making sure you get enough sleep and water, it’s time to talk about your skin!
Love it or hate it, your skin is one of the first things people notice when they meet you.
So much of your natural skin care routine comes down to how well you are caring for your skin. All of us want to age beautifully with as little wrinkles and sun damage as possible. I’d try just about any natural skin care routine if it meant I could age like Jennifer Aniston or Sandra Bullock!
It will also help you save money on makeup in the long term because you won’t need to use as many products to achieve the “natural” look many of us are after. (That’s why I recommend only using organic skin care products!)
You also won’t have to deal with skin discoloration, acne scars, or deep wrinkles. Preventing skin problems now is WAY easier than trying to correct them in the future.
If you want to take care of your skin but don’t want it to take all morning, I hear you. I’ve got three quick steps to help you create a natural skin care routine that works for you, complete with organic skin care product recommendations that you’ll love!
Wash and cleanse your face
You’ve probably heard this recommendation a thousand times, but it’s so important to start this habit as early as you can. Your first step is to find a good face wash that doesn’t strip your face from the oils it needs to stay healthy but still gets rid of all of your makeup.
When you find the right face wash, it can feel like you’ve found the holy grail of all organic skin care products! If you have great quality makeup products but use a poor face wash, you won’t be able to cleanse your skin. This could lead to increased breakouts, blackheads, and other types of acne.
My favorite face wash is Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser, hands down. And trust me, I’ve tried dozens of products over the years! I love it because it’s non-irritating, non-sensitizing and appropriate for every skin type.
It leaves your skin feeling so soft and clean without leaving a sticky residue like other face washes do. Investing in cruelty-free products is really important to me, so I also love that it is vegan and gluten-free.
If you’re looking into other face wash products, you can look for clean beauty-approved products. These are all the rage right now because they don’t use unnecessary scents and ingredients in them. You can find them easily by looking for the “x” logo at Sephora, or by searching for them on Amazon.
Don’t be discouraged if you need to try a few different cleansers before you find the right one. You’ll want to try each organic skin care product for at least one or two months to see how it affects your skin.
Don’t forget to moisturize
After you wash your face with cleanser, you aren’t ready for the day quite yet. Before you run out the door, you’ll want to choose a moisturizer depending on your day plans.
If I’m staying at home to edit Get Found Stock photos, collaborating with my team via Slack, or managing my clients’ Pinterest accounts, I’m usually not planning to wear makeup. These are some of my favorite days because I can let my skin rest, relax, and rejuvenate. Naked face days are crucial to improving your skin!
If I decide to go out and work at my coworking space or speak at an event like Alt Summit, I always prepare my skin with sunblock. This is especially helpful since I live in (almost) always sunny California! If you’re looking for a starter kit to help you test out what moisturizing organic skin care products work best, this starter kit from Drunk Elephant is a lazy girl’s best friend.
Start or end the day with a face mask
Anyone who knows me knows I have a face mask for just about every occasion. It’s not uncommon for my son to walk into the kitchen and see me making breakfast with a face mask on.
If you’re feeling dull, tired, or simply need to wake up, my quick fix is always to wash my face and put on a face mask. Although it feels good to put on, it feels even better when you wash or peel it off. You’ll have a hard time resisting the urge to constantly pet your skin throughout the day.
Looking for facemasks to try? Before you aimlessly stroll through the aisles of Sephora or Target, I’ll save you some time by giving you a few of my favorites to try. (You’ll have to send me a DM on Instagram if you use any and love them!)
Now you’ve got the basics of a great natural skin care routine!
The great thing about building these steps into your daily natural skin care routine is that it will inspire you to create other healthy routines in your business and life.
